The Packers Are Preparing for a Possible Josh Jacobs Suspension — What It Means for Fantasy

The Josh Jacobs situation just became harder for fantasy managers to ignore.

Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst told reporters Wednesday that Green Bay has prepared for the possibility that Jacobs could be suspended.

But there is an important distinction here:

Josh Jacobs has not been suspended.

Gutekunst did not say the Packers expect a suspension.

He said they have prepared for the possibility of one.

For fantasy football, that makes this a risk-management question rather than a reason to immediately remove Jacobs from draft boards.

What Actually Changed?

The biggest development is that Green Bay publicly acknowledged it has a contingency plan.

When Gutekunst was asked about the possibility of losing Jacobs, he expressed confidence that the Packers could handle it and said the organization has prepared in case it happens.

That is notable.

It does not tell us that a suspension is coming.

It does tell us Green Bay understands that the possibility remains unresolved as the regular season approaches.

Jacobs was arrested in May following allegations related to a domestic incident. The Brown County District Attorney's Office did not file formal charges at the time and requested additional investigation. The investigation has remained open.

Jacobs' attorneys have denied the allegations.

The NFL can also discipline players under its Personal Conduct Policy separately from the criminal process.

So there are still multiple possible outcomes.

For fantasy managers, pretending there is zero risk no longer makes sense.

Neither does assuming Jacobs is about to miss half the season.

Jacobs Has Been Too Good to Simply Cross Off

This is where price matters.

When Jacobs has been on the field in Green Bay, he has remained an extremely valuable fantasy running back.

In full PPR scoring, Jacobs averaged approximately:

17.2 fantasy points per game in 2024

15.8 fantasy points per game in 2025

That is the production I care about more than his overall seasonal finish, especially because he missed games last season.

Green Bay has consistently trusted him with valuable work.

Carries.

Receptions.

Red-zone opportunities.

Touchdowns.

Nothing about Wednesday's comments suggests his football role has changed when he is available.

The question is simply how many games we can confidently project him to be available for.

The Market Is Already Charging a Discount

This is why I'm not panic-dropping Jacobs down my rankings.

His current PPR ADP is around the beginning of Round 4 in some consensus data, with FantasyPros listing him around 32nd overall and RB16.

That's already different from the price we would probably be paying for Jacobs if there were no off-field uncertainty.

You're not drafting him like a completely risk-free RB1.

You're already receiving some discount for the unknown.

If this news pushes him even farther down draft boards without an actual suspension being announced, there could eventually be more upside than downside in the price.

MarShawn Lloyd Is Now One of the More Important Handcuffs

The player who gains the most from this news is MarShawn Lloyd.

Lloyd has received the first opportunity behind Jacobs this preseason.

When Jacobs has been unavailable because of his groin injury, Lloyd has worked with the starting offense.

He also caught a touchdown against Denver during the preseason.

The talent has never really been the question with Lloyd.

Availability has.

Lloyd has appeared in only one regular-season game during his first two NFL seasons.

That makes it difficult for me to immediately project him as a 20-touch replacement if Jacobs misses time.

But the opportunity would become extremely valuable.

If Jacobs were suspended, Lloyd would have the best chance to lead Green Bay in rushing attempts.

I Wouldn't Assume Lloyd Gets the Entire Backfield

This is the part that could get lost if Lloyd starts flying up draft boards.

Green Bay has other backs it trusts for specific jobs.

Chris Brooks has value in pass protection and on passing downs.

Pierre Strong Jr. has also been competing for a roster spot.

And Gutekunst specifically talked about the depth of the entire running back room rather than presenting Lloyd as the automatic replacement for Jacobs.

That sounds more like a backfield Green Bay believes it can piece together than one where it would simply hand every Jacobs touch to one player.

Lloyd would be my preferred fantasy option.

That doesn't make him a guaranteed workhorse.

Don't Chase the Handcuff After the News

This is where I think fantasy managers can make the next mistake.

Lloyd was cheap.

Now everyone knows why he matters.

If his ADP starts jumping multiple rounds because of one Gutekunst quote, the value begins disappearing.

Remember what we're betting on:

Jacobs has to actually be suspended.

The suspension has to occur during the fantasy season.

Lloyd has to stay healthy.

And Lloyd still has to win enough of the available work over Brooks and the rest of the backfield.

There is real upside.

There are also several steps between today's news and Lloyd becoming a weekly fantasy starter.

My Fantasy Read

I'm not removing Josh Jacobs from my draft plans.

I'm adding more risk to the evaluation.

At his current price, Jacobs still gives you access to a running back who averaged 17.2 and 15.8 PPR points per game during his first two seasons in Green Bay.

That's difficult production to find in the third or fourth round.

The suspension uncertainty is the reason he's available there.

If I draft Jacobs, though, MarShawn Lloyd becomes one of my favorite late-round targets.

That gives me exposure to the Green Bay backfield while protecting against the scenario that is creating Jacobs' discount in the first place.

And if someone else wants to aggressively push Lloyd up the board because of today's headline, I'll let them.

The Packers are preparing for a Josh Jacobs suspension.

Fantasy managers should prepare too.

That doesn't mean we should pretend one has already happened.
