Kayshon Boutte Gets His Chance as Houston’s WR1 With Nico Collins Out

Nico Collins is out for Week 2.

That immediately makes Kayshon Boutte one of the most interesting fantasy receivers on Sunday.

But there are two different ways to react to the news.

The lazy version is simple: Collins is Houston's WR1, Boutte replaces him, therefore Boutte inherits WR1 volume.

The better question is what Houston's actual receiver rotation tells us about the role Boutte is stepping into.

Boutte Was Already Playing — Just Not Enough

Houston traded for Boutte before the season, and DeMeco Ryans said he was picking up the offense quickly enough to play immediately.

Week 1 showed that the Texans were willing to use him.

Boutte ran 25 routes and caught one pass for 21 yards. His route participation was still only around 60%, however, trailing Collins, Dalton Schultz and Xavier Hutchinson.

That matters.

Boutte isn't going from zero snaps to the lineup. He is going from a secondary role to an offense that suddenly has a huge number of routes and targets available.

The question is how Houston distributes them.

Why Boutte Makes Sense as the Collins Replacement

Boutte is the most natural candidate to absorb the vertical and perimeter work Collins leaves behind.

Across his final two seasons in New England, Boutte averaged 16.7 yards per reception in 2025 after averaging 13.7 in 2024. He scored six touchdowns last season despite catching only 33 passes.

That's a useful profile for fantasy.

Boutte does not necessarily need eight receptions to matter. If Houston gives him the downfield routes Collins normally handles, four or five catches can create a useful fantasy line.

That becomes especially interesting in a matchup where Houston may need to throw.

Don't Ignore Xavier Hutchinson

Boutte isn't the only beneficiary.

Hutchinson actually ran more routes than Boutte in Week 1.

Houston can also use Jaylin Noel, Jared Wayne and heavier personnel with multiple tight ends.

That's why I would not project Collins' target share directly onto Boutte.

The Texans could replace Collins by committee even if Boutte is the receiver whose job changes the most.

For fantasy managers, that's an important distinction.

Boutte has upside because his routes should increase and the quality of those routes could improve.

He isn't automatically a target hog.

What I Want to See Sunday

The box score matters, but the usage will matter more.

Watch Boutte's route participation first.

If he jumps from roughly 60% into the 80-90% range, we have a much more interesting player even if the Week 2 stat line is modest.

Then watch where the targets come.

Are the Texans using Boutte on intermediate and deep routes?

Is C.J. Stroud looking for him on third down?

Does he get anything in the red zone?

Those clues will tell us whether Houston views Boutte as a temporary body filling Collins' spot or a receiver capable of becoming a larger part of the offense.

The Fantasy Decision

Boutte is worth adding before Sunday where he is available.

I would be more aggressive in deeper leagues and leagues where you can afford to stash a receiver for a week rather than needing immediate guaranteed production.

For Week 2 lineups, he is more of an upside flex than a player I want to force into every starting lineup.

There is still uncertainty.

But this is exactly when fantasy managers should be willing to get ahead of a role change.

Waiting for Boutte to play 85% of the routes and produce 80 yards defeats the purpose.

The FF Draft Boards Take

Nico Collins being out creates a real opportunity for Kayshon Boutte.

Just don't simplify it into “Boutte becomes Collins.”

Week 1 showed that Boutte was still fourth in Houston's route hierarchy. Week 2 gives him the chance to change that.

If his route share jumps, Houston gives him the vertical work, and Stroud starts treating him like a primary read, Boutte could become more than a one-week injury replacement.

That's the part fantasy managers should be watching Sunday.
