Puka Nacua's Hip Injury Changes the Rams' Week 3 Fantasy Math

Puka Nacua missed Monday night with a hip injury and Sean McVay is only hopeful for Week 3. Davante Adams' 195-yard eruption showed exactly where the passing game can go if Nacua sits again.

Puka Nacua's Week 3 status is already one of the most important injury situations in fantasy football.

Nacua missed Monday night's 28-6 win over the Giants because of a hip injury. Rams coach Sean McVay said Tuesday that Nacua's status for Sunday night's game in Denver is still to be determined, although he is hopeful Nacua can play.

Fantasy managers need to prepare for both outcomes.

Davante Adams showed what happens without Nacua

With Nacua inactive, Davante Adams became the center of Los Angeles' passing game.

Adams caught eight of 10 targets for 195 yards and two touchdowns. Matthew Stafford threw for 327 yards and four scores after a quiet Week 1.

Nobody should project another 195-yard game if Nacua misses Week 3. What matters is the concentration of the offense.

When the Rams were missing their usual target leader, Stafford had no problem leaning heavily on Adams.

That makes Adams an automatic start regardless of Nacua's status. If Nacua sits again, Adams moves into the highest tier of weekly receiver plays even with Denver's secondary presenting a tougher matchup than New York did.

What if Nacua plays?

A Nacua return would obviously cut into the target ceiling Adams enjoyed Monday.

It should not send Adams back to fantasy benches.

The Rams acquired Adams to be a major part of the offense, and one bad Week 1 should not outweigh what he has done over a much larger sample. His Week 2 performance was extreme, but it also reminded fantasy managers that the ceiling remains intact.

Nacua, meanwhile, belongs in lineups if he is active without a meaningful limitation. The bigger question will be whether Los Angeles manages his snaps after holding him out Monday.

That's why practice participation later in the week matters more than early optimism.

Who else benefits if Nacua sits?

Los Angeles used Konata Mumpfield, Xavier Smith and Tutu Atwell behind Adams on Monday, while the tight ends also remained involved.

Those players are deeper-league considerations, not players fantasy managers should force into normal starting lineups based solely on Nacua's absence.

The clearest fantasy effect is simpler: more of the passing offense flows through Adams.

What fantasy managers should do

Nacua managers should have a contingency plan before Sunday night. Because the Rams play in prime time, waiting until kickoff without another late-game option can create a roster problem.

Adams managers should start him either way.

And if someone in your league is treating Adams' Week 2 explosion as nothing more than an injury-driven fluke, that is probably too aggressive in the other direction. Nacua's return will lower the target ceiling, but Adams remains attached to Matthew Stafford in an offense capable of supporting two high-end fantasy receivers.

Fantasy takeaway: Monitor Nacua's practice participation closely. If he sits, Adams becomes one of Week 3's strongest receiver plays. If Nacua returns, both Rams stars still belong in fantasy lineups.
