Dallas Goedert Is Out for Weeks — But Don't Assume Zach Ertz Is an Instant Replacement
Dallas Goedert's MCL sprain leaves Philadelphia thin at tight end, and Zach Ertz is back with the Eagles. The reunion matters, but fantasy managers should be careful about expecting an immediate one-for-one replacement.
The Eagles brought Zach Ertz back for a reason.
Dallas Goedert suffered an MCL sprain in Sunday's win over Tennessee and is expected to miss multiple weeks. Philadelphia was already thin at tight end, with Eli Stowers and Grant Calcaterra on injured reserve.
That led to a reunion with Ertz.
The fantasy mistake would be assuming that automatically makes Ertz the new Goedert.
Ertz has a path to the job
Philadelphia's healthy tight end options are limited.
Johnny Mundt and E.J. Jenkins handled the position after Goedert left Sunday, but neither became a major part of the passing game. That creates a real opportunity for Ertz once he is ready.
He also knows the organization and has years of experience working in NFL passing games.
The problem is his current condition.
Ertz is 35 and is returning from the torn ACL he suffered last December. He did not spend training camp ramping up with another team. Even if Philadelphia elevates him for Monday night's game in Chicago, it would be aggressive to assume he immediately steps into a full Goedert workload.
The first beneficiaries may be the wide receivers
Goedert's absence removes targets from the middle of Philadelphia's offense.
Until Ertz proves he can handle a substantial route load, some of those opportunities can flow toward DeVonta Smith and the Eagles' secondary receivers rather than directly to another tight end.
Dontayvion Wicks and Makai Lemon are particularly interesting to monitor because Philadelphia may need to redistribute passing-game work instead of replacing Goedert snap for snap.
That doesn't make either player an automatic fantasy start. It does make their target totals more important over the next few weeks.
What about Johnny Mundt?
Mundt played the majority of the available tight end snaps after Goedert went down.
That gives him short-term relevance, especially if Ertz is not ready for a meaningful role Monday.
But playing snaps and earning fantasy targets are different things. Mundt caught two passes for eight yards after taking over in Week 2.
He is more useful as evidence that Philadelphia has someone capable of handling the position structurally than as a player fantasy managers need to chase.
How to treat Ertz
Ertz is a reasonable stash in deeper leagues where tight ends disappear quickly.
He is not yet someone FF Draft Boards would recommend forcing into a Week 3 lineup.
Watch whether he is elevated, how much he practices and whether Philadelphia gives any indication that he is ready for a normal workload.
If his routes climb quickly, the opportunity is obvious because Goedert is expected to miss multiple games.
If the Eagles bring him along slowly, the fantasy value created by Goedert's injury may initially show up more in the wide receiver room.
Fantasy takeaway: Ertz has a path to becoming Philadelphia's top tight end while Goedert is out, but this is a stash-before-start situation. His post-ACL workload matters more than the familiar name.
