Zay Flowers Is Doubtful — Rashod Bateman Could Walk Into a Huge Week 2 Role

Zay Flowers enters Sunday listed as doubtful with a hamstring injury.

For fantasy managers, that creates one of the most important late lineup situations of Week 2.

Rashod Bateman is the obvious name to circle.

But “Flowers is out, therefore Bateman gets all of his targets” is too simple.

Baltimore has Derrick Henry, Mark Andrews, Isaiah Likely and Lamar Jackson's rushing ability. The Ravens can replace Flowers' production without replacing his role one-for-one.

That makes Bateman's opportunity interesting — and slightly more complicated than it looks.

Start With the Inactive List

Flowers was limited Friday but carries a doubtful designation.

Fantasy managers should plan as though he will not play unless Baltimore gives us a surprise Sunday morning.

That matters because Flowers is normally the receiver Baltimore can move around the formation and manufacture touches for.

If he sits, those routes and targets have to go somewhere.

Bateman is the receiver most likely to see the largest direct increase.

Why Bateman Is the Best Bet

Bateman does not need to become Flowers to matter.

He needs Baltimore to increase his target share while keeping him on the field for nearly every passing situation.

The Ravens can use him outside, attack intermediate areas and give Lamar Jackson a trusted veteran option when the defense commits extra attention to the run.

That creates a useful fantasy combination: increased opportunity in an offense capable of generating scoring chances.

Bateman also has touchdown upside.

Without Flowers, Baltimore loses one of its best separators near the goal line and on designed concepts. Bateman becomes a logical candidate to pick up some of those high-value looks.

The Targets Won't All Go to a Receiver

This is where fantasy managers should be careful.

Mark Andrews and Isaiah Likely can both benefit.

Baltimore can lean more heavily into two-tight-end personnel and make the passing offense run through the middle of the field.

The Ravens can also simply run more.

Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry give Baltimore the ability to respond to a receiver injury by changing the structure of the offense rather than forcing another wideout into ten targets.

So Bateman's projection should rise.

It should not automatically rise by Flowers' entire workload.

What About Devontez Walker?

Walker becomes more interesting in deeper leagues because additional receiver snaps should be available.

He is not someone I would force into a normal Week 2 lineup.

The appeal is contingent upside.

If Baltimore uses Walker as a full-time outside receiver and allows Bateman to move around more, Walker could become a name worth remembering for waivers.

For Sunday, though, Bateman is the actionable fantasy play.

The Matchup

New Orleans does not create a reason to avoid Baltimore's passing game.

The Ravens should be able to move the football, and any receiver playing a major role alongside Jackson has touchdown equity.

The biggest concern is game environment.

If Baltimore controls the game with Henry and Jackson on the ground, there may not be enough passing volume for every beneficiary of Flowers' absence to hit.

That is why Bateman belongs in the flex conversation rather than suddenly becoming an automatic WR1.

The Fantasy Decision

If Flowers is inactive, Bateman becomes a strong flex consideration and moves into WR3 territory.

I would favor him over low-volume boom-or-bust receivers whose roles have not changed.

Andrews and Likely also receive a small bump because Baltimore may funnel more of the passing game through its tight ends.

Walker is a deep-league stash, not a player I want to rely on immediately.

Most importantly, do not leave Flowers in a lineup and hope.

The doubtful tag should have fantasy managers preparing the replacement now.

The FF Draft Boards Take

Zay Flowers' likely absence creates real opportunity for Rashod Bateman.

Just don't assume Baltimore will copy and paste Flowers' targets onto him.

Bateman should gain routes, targets and scoring opportunities.

The tight ends should gain work too.

And Baltimore always has the option of leaning harder on its running game.

If Flowers is officially inactive Sunday morning, Bateman is the cleanest fantasy beneficiary — and a legitimate Week 2 flex play.
