Defense and kicker are two positions where fantasy managers can gain an edge without committing long-term roster capital.

The goal isn't to find a player or defense you'll necessarily keep all season.

It's to find the best combination of matchup, opportunity and availability for Week 3.

For this week, Carolina's defense and Tyler Bass stand out.

D/ST streamers

1. Carolina Panthers D/ST — 4% rostered

Carolina just produced the highest-scoring fantasy defense of Week 2, posting 24 fantasy points in a 34-3 win over Atlanta.

Now the Panthers get Cleveland.

We don't want to chase last week's defensive touchdowns or turnovers blindly, but this is exactly the type of matchup where streaming makes sense: a defense coming off a disruptive performance against an offense that can give opponents opportunities for sacks and takeaways.

Carolina is available almost everywhere.

Priority: Top Week 3 stream

2. Green Bay Packers D/ST — 20%

Green Bay has recorded seven sacks through two games and gets Atlanta in Week 3.

The Packers offer a straightforward streaming profile: pressure plus a favorable matchup.

If Carolina is gone, Green Bay is a strong pivot.

Priority: High

3. Cincinnati Bengals D/ST — 8%

Cincinnati's defense has looked improved through two weeks and now gets a Pittsburgh offense that managed only three points against New England.

This isn't a defense fantasy managers need to marry for the season. For one week, the matchup makes sense.

Priority: Solid alternative

Kicker streamers

1. Tyler Bass — widely available

Bass has returned healthy and is attached to a Buffalo offense that has already scored 77 points through two games.

That's the formula we want from a fantasy kicker.

Buffalo should consistently create scoring opportunities, and Bass has converted all three of his field-goal attempts so far.

He gets the Chargers in Week 3.

Priority: Best widely available kicker target

2. Harrison Butker — check your league

Butker is near the 50% rostered cutoff depending on platform and league activity, so check availability before moving on.

He scored 17 fantasy points against Indianapolis after making four field goals and three extra points. Kansas City now travels to Miami, followed by another favorable kicking environment against Las Vegas before the Chiefs' bye.

If he's available in your ESPN league, he's an excellent short-term option.

Priority: High if available

3. Trey Smack — Packers

Smack has made all five of his field-goal attempts through two games and gets Atlanta at home.

The combination of an improving Green Bay offense and a favorable Week 3 matchup makes him a strong alternative if Bass and Butker aren't available.

Priority: Strong streamer

4. Chase McLaughlin — Buccaneers

McLaughlin has opened the season 6-for-6 on field goals, including two makes from beyond 50 yards.

Long-distance ability matters in formats that reward 50-yard field goals, and Tampa Bay gets another home game in Week 3.

Priority: Good fallback

Don't overthink these positions

The best fantasy managers don't necessarily roster the same defense and kicker for 17 weeks.

They attack matchups.

Carolina is the defensive stream to prioritize because of its availability and matchup with Cleveland. At kicker, Bass gives us exposure to an offense creating scoring opportunities at an elite rate.
