Patrick Mahomes + Eric Bieniemy: Why the Reunion Matters at His 2026 Fantasy Price
Patrick Mahomes is much cheaper in fantasy than during Eric Bieniemy's first run in Kansas City. Here's what actually matters from their 2018-22 history and why I'm interested again.
Patrick Mahomes used to be the quarterback fantasy managers had to pay a premium to draft.
That's not the case anymore.
ESPN currently has Mahomes at:
94 overall
QB15
That puts him around the Round 9/10 area in a 10-team league.
And Eric Bieniemy is back.
This Is an Actual Reunion
Bieniemy was Kansas City's offensive coordinator from 2018 through 2022.
That's not some tiny historical overlap.
That stretch covered two of the best seasons of Mahomes' career.
In 2018:
5,097 passing yards
50 passing touchdowns
NFL MVP
In 2022:
5,250 passing yards
41 passing touchdowns
NFL MVP
The Chiefs also won the Super Bowl that season.
We've already watched this combination work.
The Entire Offense Was Dominant
Across Bieniemy's first five seasons as OC, Kansas City led the NFL in:
• Points per game: 30.1 • Total touchdowns: 296 • Third-down percentage: 49% • Total yards per game: 406.2
That's a five-year sample.
I don't need to convince myself that Bieniemy understands the offense.
He does.
Don't Forget Andy Reid
This is important.
I do not want to write the history as if Eric Bieniemy alone created Patrick Mahomes.
Andy Reid is still the central offensive figure in Kansas City.
Mahomes is Mahomes.
Reid is Reid.
Bieniemy's return matters because of:
• Familiarity • Continuity • Communication • His role in the offense during an incredibly productive period
It does not mean we're copying and pasting 2018 into 2026.
Why the Reunion Is More Interesting at QB15
This is the key.
If Mahomes were going at QB2, I'd be much less interested.
At QB2, fantasy managers would already be paying for the comeback.
At QB15, I don't need a 50-touchdown season.
I simply need Mahomes to outperform the quarterbacks around him.
That's a much easier bet.
Kansas City's Weapons Still Give Him Ceiling
The offense still has players who can create explosive plays.
Rashee Rice is one of my favorite receivers near the top of drafts.
Xavier Worthy provides legitimate speed.
And Travis Kelce remains part of the structure.
Mahomes doesn't need one player to become Tyreek Hill.
He needs enough answers throughout the formation to force defenses to defend the entire offense.
Bieniemy Hasn't Been Sitting Still Either
Bieniemy spent 2025 coaching Chicago's running backs.
D'Andre Swift produced a career-high 1,087 rushing yards under him.
Chicago also finished near the top of the league in multiple rushing categories.
That's interesting because Bieniemy returns to Kansas City with additional experience from outside the Chiefs ecosystem.
He isn't simply returning after three years doing nothing.
The Risk
The risk is that fantasy Mahomes simply isn't the same thing as real-life Mahomes anymore.
Kansas City can win games without Mahomes throwing 45 touchdowns.
That's why I don't want to reach.
I also don't want to assume Bieniemy's return suddenly recreates an offense from eight years ago.
The personnel is different.
Defenses are different.
The Chiefs themselves are different.
Where I Would Draft Patrick Mahomes
ESPN: 94 overall, QB15
I like him around:
Round 9 or Round 10
That's exactly where my wait-at-QB strategy starts becoming flexible.
If Mahomes is there around Pick 90-100, I'm not waiting just to prove that I can.
The point of waiting is to get value.
At this price, Mahomes is the value.
I'm getting:
• Elite quarterback talent • Andy Reid • A familiar coordinator • A proven historical pairing • A price that no longer requires an MVP season to pay off
That's completely different from taking Mahomes in Round 3.
If someone takes him earlier?
Fine.
I'll keep waiting.
But if the room lets Patrick Mahomes sit near his current ESPN price, the Bieniemy reunion gives me one more reason to pull the trigger.
