Top 10 Fantasy Football Defenses to Start in Week 1 (2026)

Defense is one of the positions where I care more about the matchup than the name on the jersey.

A great NFL defense facing an elite quarterback can easily be a worse fantasy play than a good defense facing an offense with turnover or protection problems.

For Week 1, I'm looking primarily at:

• Sack opportunities
• Turnover potential
• Opposing quarterback
• Offensive line
• Expected points allowed
• Home-field advantage
• Touchdown upside

Weather and betting lines will matter more as we get closer to kickoff, so these rankings should continue to be updated before Week 1.

Here are my current top 10.

1. Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Cleveland Browns

Jacksonville is my favorite Week 1 defense.

Cleveland enters the season with Deshaun Watson back at quarterback, and the Browns are still working through what their new offense will actually look like.

The Jaguars are at home.

Current fantasy projections have Jacksonville allowing fewer than 18 points while generating around three sacks.

That's exactly what I want from a Week 1 defense.

Even if Watson plays efficiently, Jacksonville should have opportunities to create negative plays.

Verdict: START

2. Los Angeles Chargers vs. Arizona Cardinals

This checks almost every streaming box.

Home defense.

Young opposing offense.

Legitimate pass-rush upside.

The Chargers are currently projected for roughly three sacks and are among the highest-projected fantasy defenses of the week.

Arizona has exciting offensive talent, but exciting does not necessarily mean mistake-free.

Week 1 is a perfect time to attack an offense still establishing its identity.

Verdict: START

3. Seattle Seahawks vs. New England Patriots

I'm willing to trust one of the NFL's best defenses at home in the season opener.

Seattle begins its Super Bowl defense against New England.

The Patriots are not an offense I'm automatically afraid to stream against.

Seattle's defensive environment is also exactly what we want for fantasy:

Home crowd.

Pass rush.

Turnover potential.

And an opponent likely forced to throw if Seattle's offense creates an early lead.

This isn't just a one-week streamer.

Seattle is one of the defenses I actually wouldn't mind drafting and holding.

Verdict: START

4. Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Atlanta Falcons

Pittsburgh at home is almost always interesting when the opposing offense gives the pass rush opportunities.

The Steelers are currently projected for close to three sacks with one of the higher interception projections of Week 1.

Atlanta has explosive players.

That keeps Pittsburgh below the first three.

But fantasy defense isn't only about preventing yards.

Sacks and turnovers can rescue the score even if Atlanta moves the football.

Verdict: START

5. Tennessee Titans vs. New York Jets

This is one of my favorite pure streaming plays.

Tennessee isn't a defense I'm necessarily trying to roster all season.

Week 1 is different.

The Titans get the Jets at home and currently project for around three sacks.

That's the profile I'm targeting when I wait until the final round to draft a defense.

I don't need Tennessee to become an elite defense.

I need one useful matchup.

They have one.

Verdict: STREAM

6. Detroit Lions vs. New Orleans Saints

Detroit's defense gets one of my favorite Week 1 environments.

Home.

Favored offense.

A Saints team that may be forced into a pass-heavy game script.

If Detroit's offense puts points on the board early, the defense can start hunting sacks and turnovers.

That's where fantasy points can pile up.

The Lions are currently among the highest projected Week 1 D/STs.

Verdict: START

7. Philadelphia Eagles vs. Washington Commanders

Philadelphia's actual defensive talent keeps them inside my top 10 even though the matchup isn't as clean as some others.

Washington has enough offensive talent that I'm not calling this an elite streamer.

But the Eagles have the type of front that can create fantasy production even against competent offenses.

I'd start Philadelphia if I already drafted them.

I wouldn't necessarily spend priority waiver capital to get them specifically for Week 1.

Verdict: START

8. Baltimore Ravens at Indianapolis Colts

Road defenses usually make me slightly more cautious.

Baltimore is good enough that I'm still interested.

The Ravens have enough defensive talent to create pressure without needing the perfect matchup.

Indianapolis also gives Baltimore opportunities to create turnovers if the game gets pushed into obvious passing situations.

This is another case where I trust the defense more than I love the matchup.

Verdict: START

9. Las Vegas Raiders vs. Miami Dolphins

This is my deeper Week 1 streamer.

Miami's offense enters the year with a completely rebuilt receiver room and several young pieces playing major roles.

The Raiders get them at home.

Current projections also like Las Vegas more than the defense's season-long reputation might suggest.

That's exactly the type of Week 1 situation I want to exploit.

You don't have to keep the Raiders after this game.

Verdict: STREAM

10. Los Angeles Rams vs. San Francisco 49ers

This is the riskiest defense in my top 10.

San Francisco still has Brock Purdy and Christian McCaffrey.

That alone keeps the floor lower.

But the Rams have become one of the stronger fantasy defenses overall, and the game is being played in Melbourne rather than a normal San Francisco home environment.

There are also enough health questions around the 49ers offense that I don't automatically avoid the matchup.

If you drafted the Rams, I'm comfortable playing them.

There are safer streaming options above them.

Verdict: START, BUT DON'T FORCE IT

Just Outside the Top 10

The defenses I'm keeping closest to the rankings are:

Houston Texans vs. Buffalo

Excellent defense. Terrible matchup.

Denver Broncos at Kansas City

One of fantasy's best defenses, and Patrick Mahomes' knee status makes this fascinating. If Mahomes is ruled out, Denver would shoot up these rankings.

Minnesota Vikings vs. Green Bay

A strong defense with turnover upside, but Jordan Love keeps the matchup from being an obvious stream.

Chicago Bears at Carolina

If you want a deeper streaming option, this is one I'd consider.

My Week 1 Strategy

I'm not drafting a defense because I think I'll use it for 17 weeks.

I'm drafting a matchup.

If Jacksonville, the Chargers, Seattle or Pittsburgh is available late, I'm happy.

If they're gone, Tennessee and Las Vegas are exactly why I don't panic.

There will always be usable defenses available.

Attack the matchup.

Then do it again next week.
